In this talk, Dr. Arvind Ramanathan, Associate Professor, InStem, discusses how one of the hallmarks of healthy aging is the ability to maintain skeletal muscle mass and function. He talks about sarcopenia and how it is associated with the loss of muscle function, which results in frailty. It is well established that preserving skeletal muscle mass and function is crucial for maintaining healthy aging, as it is closely linked to cardiovascular health, metabolic health, and cognitive function.
In an integrative analysis using metabolomics, lipidomics, and microbiome clinical readouts, Dr. Ramanathan identifies thirteen lipids, sixteen metabolites, and fifty-four microbiome markers associated with sarcopenia.
The talk highlights the importance of pilot studies for understanding the interaction between microbiome, metabolome, and sarcopenia in an Indian context, and how nutritional and environmental factors might contribute to the development of sarcopenia.
