📚 Blood functions as a specialized connective tissue that maintains homeostasis through transport, protection, and regulation of the internal environment. This fluid medium circulates continuously to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues while simultaneously removing carbon dioxide and metabolic byproducts, while also stabilizing pH, osmotic pressure, and body temperature. The plasma component comprises approximately 55 percent of blood volume and consists of water, plasma proteins including albumins and fibrinogen, electrolytes, and dissolved substances necessary for physiological functions. The remaining 45 percent comprises formed elements: erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets, each with specialized roles in maintaining organismal function. Erythrocytes are biconcave, anucleate cells optimized for gas exchange, containing hemoglobin molecules with iron-containing heme groups that reversibly bind oxygen in proportion to partial pressure, enabling efficient oxygen delivery to tissues and carbon dioxide return to lungs. Hematopoiesis occurs in red bone marrow where hemocytoblasts differentiate through lymphoid and myeloid pathways, producing the diverse blood cell populations required for survival. Erythropoietin, released primarily by kidneys during hypoxia, stimulates red blood cell production to maintain oxygen-carrying capacity. When erythrocytes reach senescence after approximately 120 days, macrophages in the spleen and liver phagocytose them, leading to hemoglobin degradation and bilirubin formation; impaired hepatic processing of bilirubin results in jaundice. Blood typing depends on surface antigens and corresponding antibodies; the ABO system categorizes individuals into groups based on glycoprotein antigens, while the Rh system involves the D antigen whose absence in Rh-negative individuals can trigger immune responses during pregnancy, potentially causing hemolytic disease of the newborn. Leukocytes comprise two functional classes: granulocytes including neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils, distinguished by cytoplasmic granules and specific immune functions, and agranulocytes including monocytes and lymphocytes that contribute to adaptive and innate immunity. Hemostasis prevents blood loss through vascular constriction, platelet adhesion and aggregation forming a temporary plug, and a coagulation cascade converting soluble fibrinogen into fibrin clots. Multiple disorders affect blood homeostasis, including nutritional deficiencies causing anemia, genetic mutations producing hemolytic conditions and clotting disorders, infections compromising immune function, and malignant transformations resulting in leukemias and lymphomas.
