Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are often promoted as a powerful combination for heart and artery health—but what does the scientific evidence actually tell us? In this video, we take a closer look at what D3 and K2 may do for your arteries, what the research has found, and where the claims go too far. We cover: • Why vitamin D is associated with cardiovascular health • What the large VITAL trial found about vitamin D3 and cardiovascular events • Why taking more vitamin D isn't necessarily better • What vitamin K2 and matrix Gla protein (MGP) have to do with vascular calcification • Whether K2 can actually remove calcium from your arteries • What research on MK-7 and coronary artery calcification has found • Why a coronary calcium score doesn't tell the whole story about your cardiovascular risk • The connection between metabolic health and cardiovascular disease • Why blood glucose, blood pressure, physical activity, body composition, and diet matter • Why you shouldn't automatically copy someone else's vitamin D3 or K2 dose • Why people taking warfarin and other vitamin K antagonists need to be especially careful with vitamin K supplementation The bottom line is simple: vitamin D3 and K2 may have important biological roles, but current evidence does not establish K2 as a treatment that simply “cleans calcium out of your arteries” or reverses atherosclerosis. The goal isn't to take the most supplements possible. The goal is to understand your individual risk factors and make informed decisions based on evidence, appropriate testing, lifestyle, and professional medical guidance. Sources Manson JE, et al.
