The pelvic floor muscles are largely disregarded by the majority of medical practitioners on earth. Regulating the ANS towards homeostasis is key to any medical treatment’s efficacy. Just about all PT patients present with SANS hyperactivity. Therefore, targeting the PANS to depress the SANS and elevate the PANS, bringing the ANS toward homeostasis, should be a goal of all needling treatments.
The pelvic floor musculature is innervated by a parasympathetic-dominant portion of the ANS, S2-S4, to some degree or other. If the muscles are pathologic in any way, negative afferent signals, oftentimes unconscious due to the tendency of these muscles to form latent trigger points, constantly bombard the brain. This disrupts autonomic nervous system homeostasis. A dysregulated autonomic nervous system is not good. For anything. At all.
