Most people associate sleep problems with stress, screen time, or caffeine. But one factor that often gets overlooked is when you move your body.
As a functional nutritionist and sleep medicine specialist, I work with clients who do everything “right” but still struggle with sleep. And timing is often the missing piece.
Research shows that late-evening physical activity can disrupt melatonin secretion by elevating cortisol and adrenaline levels. These hormones signal alertness, not rest, which delays your body’s natural sleep processes and reduces sleep efficiency (Liu H. et al., 2025).
On the flip side, moderate-intensity movement in the morning or early afternoon helps stabilize your internal clock. This supports melatonin production at night, improves sleep onset, and even benefits metabolic health markers like glucose control and insulin sensitivity (Liu H. et al., 2025).
The relationship between movement and sleep is about more than just exercise; it’s about rhythm and consistency. Morning movement, regular sleep-wake cycles, and reduced light exposure in the evening all reinforce a healthy circadian rhythm (Liu H. et al., 2025).
What stood out to me most was how subtle these shifts can be. You don’t need to train harder, just earlier.
This is something I’ve been integrating into personalized protocols lately, and it’s often the small timing tweaks that make the biggest difference.
If you’ve been working on your health but sleep still feels off, don’t just look at what you’re doing. Look at when you’re doing it.
