How should we actually think about food when it comes to healthy aging? That was the opening question for Harshavardhan Rao, Darshit Patel, Vishal Rao US and Gurmeet Singh, and the answer went well past the usual talk of macronutrients. Fibre still matters for a healthy microbiome, but so do less obvious players like iron and polyphenols, most of which pass unmetabolized into the colon, where their interaction with gut bacteria is still poorly understood.
On the high-protein diet trend, the panel cautioned that excess protein fermentation in the gut can increase inflammatory sulphate and nitrate-producing metabolites — a reminder that balance matters more than optimizing for any single nutrient.
Sequencing has gotten very good at telling us which microbes are present; the harder, more useful question now is what those microbes are doing, gene by gene. That shift opens the door to real personalization, including microbiome-informed nutrition for cancer patients, and the panel even drew a parallel to the Ayurvedic ideas of Prakriti and Vikriti.
