It’s an uncomfortable question, but social science offers a counterintuitive answer: As our bank accounts grow, our "empathy muscle" often atrophies.
We assume that having "more to spare" leads to more giving. However, research—including Paul Piff’s famous "Rigged Monopoly" study—suggests that wealth can actually create an "insulation" effect.
Here is why the Empathy Gap happens as we climb the ladder:
🔹 The Proportionality Paradox: Lower-income individuals often donate a significantly higher percentage of their earnings than the wealthy. For many, generosity is a survival strategy for community resilience. 🔹 The "Buffer" Effect: Wealth buys independence. When you can pay for every solution, you stop relying on neighbors. This "social decoupling" makes it harder to notice the struggles of others. 🔹 The Meritocracy Trap: The more we succeed, the more we credit our own "hard work," overlooking the role of luck or timing. This can lead to a sense of entitlement that lowers compassion.
The Good News? Generosity is Biological Medicine.
Practicing generosity isn't just a moral choice; it’s a physiological win. Acting altruistically triggers a "Helper’s High," releasing oxytocin and dopamine while lowering cortisol. Data shows that regular giving can actually lower blood pressure and extend longevity.
Generosity isn't a byproduct of having enough—it’s an intentional practice. As we grow in our careers, our "default" setting often shifts toward self-interest.
To stay grounded, we have to exercise our empathy through:
1. Proportional giving (focusing on the % of your capacity, not just the dollar amount).
2. Proximate leadership (staying close to the challenges your community faces).Wealth is a powerful tool, but it can also be a blindfold. Don't let your success isolate you.
