New in BMJ Medicine: people who did the widest variety of physical activities had a 19% lower risk of death from any cause — after adjusting for how much total exercise they did.
Observational analysis, 111,373 adults, three decades, 38,847 deaths. Variety was also associated with 13% to 41% lower mortality from heart disease, cancer, and respiratory disease. Total volume plateaued near 20 MET-hours a week.
The caveats are real. Observational data cannot prove cause and effect, activity was self-reported, and these were mostly white health professionals.
Today's drop: add one kind of movement you have not done this week — a set of squats, two flights of stairs, ten minutes of rowing.
Different movements load different tissues. Resistance work builds the muscle that clears glucose; walking sharpens insulin sensitivity. Variety covers more of the metabolic root-cause map in the same hours.
