Is creatine actually a longevity supplement?
The most studied, most dismissed supplement in the world is sitting in gym bags — and most people think it's just for getting bigger. But the research that's emerging isn't about your muscles. It's about your brain.
Creatine isn't a steroid or a stimulant. It's a compound your body already makes and stores — in muscle, but also in your brain — and it helps your cells rapidly recharge their energy. A 2025 review of creatine and cognition in older adults found 5 of 6 studies showed a benefit, especially for memory and attention.
As a medical school professor who has worked at both UCLA and USC, here's the honest caveat: it's not bulletproof yet. But it's cheap, very safe at 3–5 grams a day, and the mechanism is real. The people who seem to benefit most? Older adults, and those who eat little meat — because dietary creatine comes mostly from meat and fish. So much of aging comes down to declining cellular energy, and creatine works on exactly that bottleneck.
If you're older, lift weights, or eat little meat, it's worth discussing with your doctor.
