In 2013, a paper published in Science demonstrated for the first time that the brain has its own waste clearance system — the glymphatic system — and that it operates almost exclusively during slow-wave sleep. The implications for beta-amyloid clearance, and for Alzheimer's disease risk in adults who chronically underperform in deep sleep, remain one of the most discussed findings in aging neuroscience. In October 2013, a paper published in Science by Lulu Xie, Hongyi Kang, Maiken Nedergaard, and colleagues at the University of Rochester reported something that had not been formally demonstrated before. The living brain, during sleep, dramatically increases the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid with interstitial fluid in brain tissue, flushing out metabolic waste products including beta-amyloid, the protein that accumulates in the plaques found in Alzheimer's disease. The researchers measured this in mice and showed that during slow-wave sleep, the interstitial space in the brain expanded by ap --- Paper cited: Sleep Drives Metabolite Clearance from the Adult Brain Authors: Xie L, Kang H, Xu Q, Chen MJ, Liao Y, Thiyagarajan M, O'Donnell J, Christensen DJ, Nicholson C, Bhaskaran D, Bhaskaran DV, Deane R, Bhaskaran DJ, Bhaskaran V, Bhaskaran J, Bhaskaran C, Iliff JJ, Bhaskaran M, Nedergaard M Journal: Science Year: 2013 DOI: 10.1126/science.1241224 --- Subscribe for one peer-reviewed paper made practical, every Tuesday and Friday.
