Could a topical cream do what injectable neurotoxins do? In this conversation recorded in Paris, Dr. Lain talks with Dr. Bjerring about P-TIOX. It's a topical formula with two small neuropeptides: one works presynaptically, like botulinum toxin, and the other blocks acetylcholine receptors on the muscle itself.
These molecules are under 1,000 daltons, small enough to penetrate the skin, which botulinum toxin can't do. That's why P-TIOX is being called "Botox in a bottle."
We discuss:
00:00 What P-TIOX is and why it's called a neurotoxin
00:43 Why earlier topical neurotoxins failed, and how this one differs
01:29 Presynaptic vs. postsynaptic action explained
02:01 Sweat glands and hyperhidrosis
02:36 The half-forehead trial using the Minor's starch-iodine test
04:44 Results: reduced sweating on the treated side
05:25 Muscle activity: why three applications wasn't enough to tell
In a small pilot test, P-TIOX was applied to one half of the forehead three times: 16, 4 and 2 hours before exercise. After squats, the Minor's test showed sweating on the untreated side but not on the treated side. There was no clear effect on muscle movement with this short protocol, so longer application may be needed.
