I used to think fixing someone’s circadian rhythm was all about light. Get morning sunlight. Avoid screens at night. Simple in theory. But in practice, it didn’t always work. I saw clients doing everything right. Timing their meals. Going for walks. Winding down with no screens before bed. And still waking up tired, inflamed, out of sync. That’s what pushed me to look deeper. Not just when we sleep or eat, but what’s happening inside our gut that might be controlling those rhythms in the first place. That’s where butyrate came in. It’s a short chain fatty acid made when your gut microbes ferment fiber. But it doesn’t just stay in the gut. It travels, signals, and influences how genes behave in tissues like the liver, muscle, and intestines (dos Santos A. & Vasylyshyn A., 2025). Butyrate helps activate genes that run your biological clock, not by changing your DNA but by altering how your body reads it. That’s epigenetics (Caprara G. et al., 2025). Your gut can actually talk to your circadian rhythm. And it’s not abstract. It's measurable. Disruptions in your microbiota from antibiotics, poor diet, or even stress can misalign your internal clock and lead to metabolic issues, fatigue, or poor sleep (Cai Y. et al., 2023). The good news? It’s modifiable. Soluble fiber from fruits, veggies, and whole grains feeds the microbes that make butyrate. Exercise and meal timing amplify that effect (Cai Y. et al., 2023). If you’ve been doing all the “right” things and still feel off… Don’t just look at your schedule. Look at your gut. Want to learn more? My latest blog post breaks down how your gut shapes your body’s internal clock.
