Most people think of sleep as recovery. A way to recharge. But in the world of brain health, it’s something far more active. It’s when the glymphatic system turns on, a brain-wide cleaning network that clears toxic waste like amyloid beta and tau proteins, both linked to Alzheimer’s disease (Kim Y-K. et al., 2018). As a functional nutritionist and sleep researcher, I study how sleep, cognition, and chronic illness are connected, and one system keeps coming up: the glymphatic system. The more I’ve learned, the harder it is to see sleep as optional or negotiable. This research changed how I approach my own health and how I guide others in practice. When sleep breaks down, so does this system. And when you combine poor sleep with metabolic issues like insulin resistance, things escalate fast. Chronic hyperglycemia, or long-term high blood sugar, does more than harm your organs. It disrupts fluid flow in the brain, impairs AQP4 channels, damages the blood brain barrier, and slows the brain’s ability to detox (Buccellato F. et al., 2022). Even people in the prediabetic stage are showing signs of cognitive decline (Kim Y-K. et al., 2018). That hit me hard because so many people walk around with blood sugar issues and have no idea. It’s not just about memory. These shifts affect key brain regions like the hippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex, and amygdala, areas responsible for decision-making, emotional regulation, and long-term identity (Tahmasian M. et al., 2020). The big takeaway? Sleep isn’t passive. And blood sugar control isn’t just for heart health or energy levels. Together, they are foundational tools for long-term brain protection. Tools that help preserve not only how your brain functions, but who you are. If you want to dive deeper into this topic, you can check out my full blog post for all the research and details.
