As we age, some cells enter a state called senescence.
They stop dividing — but they do not die. Instead, they continue releasing inflammatory signals that contribute to a process called inflammaging.
Senescence itself is not inherently harmful. It helps suppress damaged cells and supports tissue repair. The problem is accumulation over time, combined with reduced immune clearance during aging.
This creates a self-reinforcing inflammatory cycle linked to aging biology itself.
Research into senolytics, autophagy, and cellular aging is now one of the fastest-growing areas in longevity science — but much of the clinical evidence in humans is still emerging.
This is Part 8 of the chronic inflammation series.
