We evolved under a sky that shifted not just in brightness but in colour: crisp blue by day, amber dark by night. Our circadian system learned to read wavelength as much as light level (Moore-Ede M. et al., 2023).
Modern life flattens this signal. Offices lit with “daylight” LEDs often fail to deliver enough melanopic dose, while evenings filled with screens and cool-white lamps send powerful blue–cyan cues at the wrong time. Two homes can look equally bright yet deliver opposite biological instructions depending on spectrum.
What matters is not ambience, but what reaches the eye. Melanopsin-containing ipRGCs are tuned to wavelengths near 480 nm, making spectrum the key driver of melatonin suppression and phase shifting (Brown T., 2020). Blue-enriched evening light disrupts sleep more than warmer spectra of equal brightness (Moore-Ede M. et al., 2023).
Clinical studies confirm that spectrum-aware lighting can advance melatonin onset, stabilise circadian rhythms, and even increase REM sleep without reducing visibility (Vethe D. et al., 2020). In hospital trials, blue-depleted evening environments preserved melatonin and improved recovery (Brown T. et al., 2022).
In practice, the targets are clear:
≥250 melanopic lux in daytime hours
≤10 in the last three evening hours
≤1 during sleep
Meeting them means more than dimming a lamp. It requires planning by spectrum, not appearance: daylight and high-melanopic sources during work, then low-melanopic, blue-depleted sources after dusk (Esposito T. & Houser K., 2022).
Light is not just décor. When timed and measured, it becomes a clinical tool that shapes sleep, mood, and health.
If this resonates, share it with a colleague or patient, and follow for practice-ready insights at the intersection of circadian science, design, and care. Read more about it on my latest blog post
