Stephen Mitchley spent 17 years leading the world's largest incentive-based health and wellness program linked to insurance, operating in 40+ markets and reaching nearly 50 million lives. In this video, he shares his perspective on three recent advances that make biological age testing practical for insurers today. For each one, he covers what it means for policyholders and what it means for insurers.
Three years ago, if you took an epigenetic age test twice in the same week, the results could differ by 4.5 years. Today that noise is down to about half a year. That's the first of the three advances.
The three advances:
Reliability. Test-retest noise has dropped roughly ninefold in about three years, from ~4.5 years to ~0.5 years. Because required sample size scales with the square of the noise, insurers need roughly 81× fewer people to detect the same effect. For an individual, a real change of about 1.4 years can now be detected with 95% confidence.
Responsiveness. Across 51 intervention studies, epigenetic aging measures moved in response to intervention. The strongest randomized evidence comes from CALERIE, where caloric restriction slowed the measured pace of aging. (This work is a preprint, so weigh it accordingly.)
Price. TIME-seq, a targeted-sequencing method from Harvard published in Nature Aging, is up to 100× cheaper than conventional array-based methods and benchmarks well on accuracy. That's a research method, not a delivered price, but the direction matters.
What we don't claim: The link between epigenetic age and mortality is well established. The causal step, that lowering your epigenetic age by X changes your mortality by Y, is not yet proven.
