Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones T3 & T4 — but too little AND too much can hurt thyroid health. Here's how much you need, where to get it, and when supplements backfire.
⚠️ Education only, not medical advice. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, vegan, or have thyroid disease, talk to your clinician before supplementing. High-dose iodine can disrupt thyroid function.

00:00 Why iodine matters for your thyroid
00:35 How iodine makes T3 & T4 (metabolism, energy, growth)
01:20 Deficiency signs & goiter
02:05 Iodized salt vs sea salt / specialty salts
02:50 Iodine-rich foods: seafood, dairy, eggs, seaweed (and why levels vary)
03:40 How much you need: 150 mcg adults / 220 mcg pregnancy / 290 mcg breastfeeding
04:30 Prenatal vitamins — why some skip iodine (read labels)
05:00 Risks of high-dose supplements & kelp (upper limit 1,100 mcg/day)
05:35 When needs change: thyroid conditions & medications
For most adults the RDA is 150 micrograms/day — 220 in pregnancy, 290 while breastfeeding. Tolerable upper intake is 1,100 mcg/day from all sources. You don't need to eat more salt to get iodine — if you use salt, choose iodized while staying within sodium limits.
Seaweed can be excellent but hugely variable: kelp and concentrated iodine products can deliver far more than labeled. Read labels carefully.
