A few months ago, I took a deep dive into my cardiovascular and metabolic health. I’ve always been proactive about testing, but I also know that standard cholesterol tests don’t tell the full story. That’s why I chose the CardioMetabolic test from Doctor’s Data, alongside a full blood panel and a DNA analysis to understand how my body processes cholesterol.
One of the most important markers I focused on? Apolipoprotein B (ApoB).
Unlike LDL cholesterol tests, which measure the amount of cholesterol in the blood, ApoB counts the number of cholesterol-carrying particles. This distinction matters because the more particles you have, the higher your cardiovascular risk—even if your LDL levels appear normal (Marston N. et al., 2021). Research confirms that ApoB is a stronger predictor of heart disease than LDL alone and should be a key factor in risk assessment (Contois J. et al., 2023).
What My Test Results Showed
When reviewing my results, I didn’t just focus on cholesterol. I looked at my entire metabolic and genetic profile. The CardioMetabolic test provided insights into my leptin-to-adiponectin ratio, metabolic health, and inflammation markers, while my DNA test highlighted genetic variations affecting cholesterol metabolism and fat processing. Fortunately, all my biomarkers were optimal.
This deeper level of testing allows me to personalize my lifestyle and nutrition strategy, rather than relying solely on LDL cholesterol as a risk marker.
If you have a family history of heart disease, insulin resistance, or metabolic issues, and your cholesterol tests have come back “normal,” you might still be at risk. ApoB testing could reveal what standard cholesterol panels overlook.
Want to understand why ApoB is such a critical marker for heart health? Read my latest blog for an in-depth explanation.
