🌙 THE 8-HOUR SLEEP MYTH Did humans always sleep for eight uninterrupted hours? Not necessarily. Historical sources describe a pattern sometimes called “first sleep” and “second sleep,” in which people went to bed, slept for a period, woke during the night, and later returned to sleep. But the story becomes more complicated. Modern studies of hunter-gatherer and small-scale societies don't show one universal ancient sleep pattern. Some groups experience relatively little extended nighttime waking, while others show substantial variation in when individuals sleep and wake. And that variation may have an important social consequence. Studies of the Hadza in Tanzania found that differences in individual chronotypes meant that someone was awake or in light sleep during almost the entire observed nighttime period—potentially providing a natural form of group vigilance. Artificial lighting later transformed the timing of human activity, allowing people to remain awake long after sunset and contributing to later sleep schedules in some populations. So the real lesson isn't that modern eight-hour sleep is “wrong.” It's that human sleep is far more flexible—and historically more varied—than the simple eight-hour block suggests. In this episode: 🌙 What “first sleep” and “second sleep” actually mean 🏭 How industrial society changed sleep schedules 🔥 What modern hunter-gatherer studies reveal 🧬 Why people naturally have different chronotypes 👁️ How group sleep can create nighttime vigilance 💡 How artificial light affects sleep timing 🧠 Why waking during the night isn't automatically abnormal Human sleep has a history. And it is stranger than you might think. What Will You Learn? 🌙 What was “first sleep” and “second sleep”? Some historical sources describe nighttime sleep divided into two periods separated by an interval of wakefulness. 🏭 Did factories invent eight-hour sleep? No. Industrialization and artificial lighting helped reshape when people slept, but there was no single invention of the modern sleep pattern. 🧬 Did all ancient humans sleep biphasically? We don't know. Historical evidence cannot establish a universal sleep pattern across hundreds of thousands of years. 🔥 What do modern hunter-gatherer studies show? Studies of Hadza, San and Tsimané groups found average sleep durations of roughly 5.7–7.1 hours, with extended nighttime waking generally uncommon in those datasets. 👁️ What is the sentinel hypothesis? It proposes that nighttime variation in sleep and wakefulness may reduce the period when an entire group is vulnerable simultaneously. ⏰ Why are some people naturally “night owls”? Individuals differ in chronotype—the timing of their natural sleep and wake preferences. 💡 How did artificial light change sleep? Electricity and other artificial lighting can delay sleep onset and extend activity into the night. 🧠 Is waking at night automatically abnormal? Not necessarily. Human sleep includes natural variation, although persistent or distressing sleep problems can warrant medical attention.
