Feeling “off” as days get shorter? The culprit might be your daytime light, not just late-night screens. In winter, many of us spend ~70% of the day under weak indoor light and only ~36 minutes above 500 lux. Low midday light nudges REM earlier and can make nights feel fragmented (Nowozin C. et al., 2025).
The simple fix: treat daylight like medicine.
- Morning anchor: 30–45 minutes of outdoor light within 60 minutes of waking. If you can’t get outside, use a bright setup at your desk. (Mattingly S. et al., 2021)
- Midday booster (most overlooked): Between 11:00–13:00, get 20–30 minutes of bright light. Overcast or very dark? Use a SAD lamp ~10,000 lux at a practical distance, eyes open, not staring (check device guidance). (Nowozin C. et al., 2025)
- Evening dimming: After sunset, switch to low, warm, indirect lighting and lower screen brightness to respect melatonin timing. (Seidler A. et al., 2023)
Why this works:
Shorter photoperiods shift your internal clock. Across seasons, wearables show earlier wakes and slightly shorter sleep as day length increases; winter often becomes the “longer sleep” baseline (Mattingly S. et al., 2021). Lab data show winter nights carry more REM and shorter REM latency, a seasonal fingerprint inside your sleep (Seidler A. et al., 2023). Midday light helps steady that rhythm (Nowozin C. et al., 2025).
Action steps today:
1. Get outside this morning.
2. Schedule a midday light break.
3. Dim it down after sunset.
Save this post and repeat the steps daily for 2 weeks. If it helps, share it with someone who struggles every winter.
