In this video, we explore the essential reasons why humans need sleep and how it works:
🌍 Biological Rhythms: Just like the cycles of the moon and the Earth’s orbit around the sun, our bodies follow natural cycles, including the sleep-wake cycle.
🕰️ Circadian Rhythms: Learn about your body's internal clock and how it regulates your daily sleep patterns.
🧠 Hypothalamus and Suprachiasmatic Nucleus: Discover the tiny part of your brain that has a massive impact on your sleep and wakefulness.
💡 Role of Light and Melatonin: Find out how light influences your sleep through the production of melatonin.
🌡️ Body Temperature and Sleep: Understand how body temperature affects your alertness and sleepiness, and get tips on optimizing your sleep environment.
⏰ How Much Sleep Do You Need?: Learn about different sleep needs based on age and individual differences.
🚫 Effects of Sleep Deprivation: See what happens when you miss out on sleep and how it impacts your memory and daily tasks.
Whether you're a night owl, a morning person, or just curious about the science of sleep, this video is packed with valuable information to help you understand the importance of those precious hours of rest.

Why do we sleep? If somehow you can avoid being unconsciousness for 8 hours every day, you can get more things done or atleast spend more time on Netflix. So why do people need to sleep and how does sleep work?
One reason for this is human body’s biological rythms, the natural cycle of activity that the body must follow.
Circadian Rhythm Explained
Everything in the universe is following a cycle. You go through a cycle of seasons throughout the year that repeat again each year. The moon revolves around the earth and earth has its cycle of revolving around the sun. Similarly your body also follows a biological cycle. Some cycles are monthly – like the menstrual cycle in women – while others are far shorts – the beating of your heart.
Some biological cycles take place on a daily basis – like the rise and fall of blood pressure and your sleep-wake cycle.
The sleep-wake cycle is called circadian rhythm – its made from two latin words – circa which means “about” and diem” which means “day” So circadian rhythm takes “about a day” to complete.
This is happening in the part of the brain called hypothalamus that is located below thalamus and just above the brain stem. This part is responsible for regulating the Autonomic nervous system. Deep within hypothalamus is the internal clock that tells people when to wake up and when to fall asleep. This internal clock is named “Suprachiamatic nucleus”.
So this suprachiasmatic nucleus, or the internal clock is sensitive to light. When the daylight fades, it tells the pineal gland to secrete melotonin (which is a hormone responsible for sleep). As melotonin accumulates, you feel sleepy. When the light comes into the eyes, in the morning, the internal clock tells the pineal gland to stop secreting melotonin, which enables you to wake up. That’s a lot of power for a tiny little part.
Body temperature also plays a role in inducing sleep. Suprachiasmatic nucleus, as part of hypothalamus, controls body temperature. The higher the body temperature, more alert people are and lower the temperature, sleepier they are. When people are asleep at night their body temperature is at its lowest. Therefore one tip for better quality sleep is to keep your room temperature slightly cooler as to what youre used to.
How much sleep is required for people? It depends on person to person. A young adult typically needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep and as you age. Some people are short sleepers requiring just 4-5 hours of sleep to function normally while others may require more than 9 hours.
What will losing out on one night’s sleep do to a person? For most people there will concentration problems and will not be able to do simple tasks such as putting a DVD in the DVD player. More complex tasks such as solving mathematical problems wont be affected much since people know it requires extra concentration. Simple daily tasks that require no thought will be impacted.
