You’re not lazy. You might be chronotype-mismatched. Let me explain what I mean about that.
About half of when you prefer to sleep and wake is genetic. We have clock genes in our cells (PER2, PER3, CRY1, CLOCK) and they drive an internal feedback loop of approximately 24h.
Here is the caveat. That 24h isn’t exactly 24h for everyone. If yours is less, you’re a morning type. If yours is more, you’re an evening type. It’s not a character defect. It’s molecular biology.
Society hasn’t been built with that in mind. Our society favours the morning type people. School day. Workday. Sport competitions.
Till Roenneberg calls it social jet lag: the continual mismatch between biological time and clock time. Epidemiological evidence like the UK Biobank has shown it to be associated with increased odds of obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression, and all-cause mortality.
And the solution isn’t going to be found in another 5 AM motivational article. Your best bet is chronotype-aligned design, shifting your nutrition timing, training, and lighting exposure, and, where possible, work hours to match your biology’s preferences.
If you know someone who keeps saying sorry for not being a morning person, please forward this to them. They’ve been listening to the wrong story.
