We often praise time-restricted eating for its ability to reduce inflammation, boost metabolism, and support repair. But what if it's depleting something your body needs to heal? In clinical practice, I kept seeing the same pattern. Some individuals, especially those with autoimmunity or chronic inflammation, felt worse during caloric restriction. Fatigue, joint pain, poor sleep, even flare-ups. At first, it was hard to explain. Until I looked deeper into vitamin D metabolism. When food is restricted, the body suppresses an enzyme called CYP2R1, which activates vitamin D. At the same time, it increases another enzyme, CYP24A1, which breaks it down (Aatsinki S-M. et al., 2019). Even short fasting windows can lower your levels of active vitamin D right when your body needs it for immune regulation, mitochondrial function, and autophagy (Zmijewski M. 2019; Shabkhizan R. et al., 2023). This isn’t just about bones. The active form of vitamin D regulates over a thousand genes related to inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular repair (Min S. et al., 2021). And it only lasts 4–6 hours in the body (Zmijewski M. 2019). So if you enter a fast depleted, or if your body breaks it down too quickly, you may end up lacking a key player in your recovery process. That changed how I approach fasting protocols. I now recommend a bolus of vitamin D before the fast (Zmijewski M. 2019), pair it with omega-3s and curcumin to preserve availability (Shabkhizan R. et al., 2023), and align eating windows with daylight to support circadian enzyme rhythms (Dos Santos A. & Galiè M., 2024). The result? Better energy. Fewer crashes. Deeper repair. Because sometimes the problem isn’t the protocol. It’s what your biology wasn’t ready for. Want to explore the full protocol and research? I shared all the details in my latest blog post.
