Poor sleep is more than just feeling tired. A major UK Biobank study of over 313,000 adults found that people with the worst long-term sleep patterns had a significantly higher risk of developing dementia, with vascular dementia risk more than doubling. The real mistake is not one bad night of sleep — it is normalising years of short, fragmented, poor-quality sleep and assuming you’ve adapted to it.
Many of my patients think sleeping five or six hours, snoring heavily, waking unrefreshed, relying on naps, staying up late scrolling, or living on irregular sleep schedules is just modern life. But research suggests these chronic sleep patterns may quietly affect brain ageing, memory, blood flow to the brain and long-term dementia risk.
In this video I explain what the latest research actually found, how sleep affects brain repair and waste clearance, the common sleep mistakes millions make, why shift work and snoring matter, and the practical steps that can improve sleep quality and protect long-term brain health.
What you'll learn:
-The sleep mistake linked to higher dementia risk
-Why one bad night is not the issue
-How chronic poor sleep may age the brain
-Snoring, sleep apnoea and hidden risk
-Why shift work can matter
-Practical sleep fixes that cost nothing
-How to improve deep sleep naturally
