Epigenetics, the Structure of DNA, & How to Improve Healthspan & Longevity: A nucleosome is made of histones and is the basic repeating subunit of chromatin. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and protein that forms our chromosomes in the nucleus of our cells. About six feet of DNA need to be fit into a cell nucleus with a diameter of about 7 micrometers. A human hair is about 75 micrometers wide. The human genome has about 3 billion base pairs. A single nucleosome consists of about 150 base pairs of DNA. In forming a chromosome, the nucleosomes repeatedly fold in on themselves to tighten and condense the packaged DNA. There are around 20,000 protein-coding genes within the human genome. Surprisingly, these genes account for only about 2-10% of our approximately 3 billion base pairs of DNA, according to current theory. This means about 90-98% of our genome is doing something other than coding for proteins, and we have no idea what it is, although we are learning. This mysterious DNA is typically called “junk” DNA, or non-coding DNA. It certainly isn’t junk and it certainly has a purpose, just like everything else in our brain and body has a purpose. We just don’t understanding what it is. The stunning arrogance of scientists to label something as ”junk” simply because they couldn’t figure out what it does is par for the course. You know what happens to a person if you remove all the so-called “junk” DNA? You die. So, you tell me. Is “junk” DNA important? Our DNA needs to be efficiently folded up in our cells so it doesn't get in the way when it isn't immediately being used, kind of like a folded tent.
