In part one of this series, we learned that a cellular cleanup system called autophagy may be connected to aging itself. In this second part, we look at the specific biological switch that turns this system on, and at an ancient practice that appears to engage it directly: structured fasting, found in some form across nearly every culture on Earth.
We cover the 2016 Nobel Prize awarded for discovering the mechanisms of autophagy, and a controlled study on Ramadan fasting and its effects on this same pathway.
