Why does something as basic as pH deserve more attention in aging research?
Every time a cell makes energy, it also produces a proton (H+), yet most textbooks talk about electrons and forget the H+ that comes with them — even though it's what shapes proteins, DNA and virtually every molecular interaction in the cell.
Prof Counillon’s lab has found that the genes controlling pH are remarkably few and ancient, conserved since before archaea and eukaryotes split apart, and that this regulation quietly underpins everything from bone building to how cells clear cellular waste.
However, this system degrades with age — the kidneys and lungs that normally buffer and expel acid become less efficient, contributing to inflammation and metabolic dysfunction in a feedback loop.
