Scientists have been exploring the impact of fasting on metabolism and its potential role in aging. In an interview, "Sunday Morning" correspondent Lee Cowan discusses this with three experts in aging research: David Sinclair from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Nir Barzilai from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Morgan Levine from the Yale Center for Research on Aging. They talk about how fasting or caloric restriction places stress on the body, which may activate its defenses against aging. One researcher explains that although many people believe eating less overall is beneficial because it slows down metabolism, it's actually the act of fasting that triggers the body’s anti-aging mechanisms. Studies on animals have shown that those on caloric restriction, eating 60% of what they normally would, live 40% longer and are healthier. However, simply eating less throughout the day without fasting doesn't have the same effect. Fasting appears to upregulate aging defenses by inducing mild stress on the body, a concept known as hormesis. This biological stress, whether from hunger, exercise, or environmental factors, helps the body become more resilient, activating genes like sirtuins that protect against aging. One of the researchers practices intermittent fasting by eating within a six-hour window each day, typically starting in the early afternoon and finishing by 8 p.m. Although the science is still being studied, this approach seems to improve mental sharpness, reduce bloating, and enhance overall well-being. The researcher advises easing into fasting gradually, suggesting that with time, it can lead to better focus, energy levels, and sleep.
