The lie I taught in medical school: with coffee, only the dose matters. New in the European Heart Journal: the clock may matter more than the cup count.
Researchers followed 40,725 US adults for a median of 9.8 years and sorted them into morning-only and all-day drinkers. Morning-type drinking was associated with a 16% lower risk of death from any cause and a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular death versus non-drinkers. All-day drinkers got no significant benefit. Same beans, different clock.
This is observational, not a trial. Morning coffee may simply mark someone who sleeps on a schedule and eats real food, and diet recalls are blunt instruments.
Today's drop: finish your last cup before noon.
Caffeine's half-life is about five hours, so an afternoon cup still has a quarter of its punch at bedtime. It shortens deep sleep, and one bad night measurably worsens insulin sensitivity the next day. Blunt your sleep and you blunt your metabolic health.
