Have you ever wondered whether the aches in your legs are really down to your statin, or whether that CoQ10 supplement everyone keeps recommending would make any difference at all? After years treating heart disease in A&E, I think the real answer is far more interesting than the online debate suggests.
This one is for anyone taking atorvastatin, simvastatin or any other cholesterol medication who wants a straight look at statin side effects, LDL cholesterol and their own heart attack and stroke risk.
We start with what a statin does inside your liver and why your CoQ10 blood level drops, then look at two clever trials where people rotated between statins, dummy tablets and empty bottles without knowing which was which. I also cover the rarer muscle damage that needs a doctor the same day, and the checks worth doing before you buy supplements.
After that we get into why cholesterol rises in the first place, from inherited conditions and thyroid problems to insulin resistance and saturated fat, and what a statin's benefit looks like in real numbers rather than headline percentages. I finish with the daily changes that reach far further than one tablet ever will.
