Blood pressure after 60 is far more complicated than simply “the lower the better”. In this video, I explain what the major blood pressure trials actually found, why aggressively lowering blood pressure can sometimes become dangerous in older adults, and how the best target depends on the person sitting in front of you, not just the number on the machine.
After years working in emergency medicine, I saw both sides of this constantly. Patients harmed by decades of uncontrolled high blood pressure, and patients harmed because their pressure had been pushed too low with medication. The real challenge is balancing cardiovascular protection against dizziness, falls, frailty and quality of life.
We’ll cover:
-The best blood pressure ranges for different older adults
-Why arterial stiffness changes everything with age
-What the SPRINT and STEP trials actually showed
-The hidden risks of pushing blood pressure too low
-Why falls become so dangerous after 80
-Warning signs your blood pressure target may be too aggressive
-How to think about blood pressure more individually
-Why lowering blood pressure naturally is different from lowering it with tablets
-The role of walking, exercise and diet in safer blood pressure control
-Why treating the person matters more than treating the number
If you’re interested in blood pressure, longevity, healthy ageing, hypertension, preventing stroke, preventing falls, metabolic health, heart health, or staying independent as you age, this video is for you.
