About this video

Creator description · original textText language: English

Today, eat fermented food — yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented cottage cheese, or kombucha. Build toward multiple servings across the day, the way the trial ramped intake. Educational tip only. Not medical advice. The lie I taught in medical school: gut microbes do not matter much for inflammation in healthy people. A Stanford randomized diet trial found a fermented-food diet increased microbiome diversity and lowered inflammatory markers. Wastyk HC et al., Cell 2021. Randomized prospective study, n≈18 per arm (fermented vs fiber), 17 weeks. Fermented-food diet increased microbiota diversity and decreased 19 of 93 inflammatory serum proteins, including IL-6. Four major immune cell types showed less activation. Primary cytokine response score unchanged. DOI 10.1016/j.cell.2021.06.019 PMID 34256014. Small healthy-adult trial, not an autoimmune or diabetes outcomes study. Fiber still remodeled microbiome function with personalized immune trajectories. Fermented food is not a cure. Dairy-free or histamine-sensitive: pick options you tolerate, or ask your clinician. Educational tip only. Not medical advice.
