🥣 Healthy aging with Mediterranean nutrition is not the same diet you would hand a 40-year-old. A team of European scientists proved it. In the NU-AGE project (2012–2015), they rewrote the Mediterranean diet for people aged 65 to 79 — and tested it on nearly 1,300 older adults in Italy, England, the Netherlands, Poland and France for one year.
They made four edits for the older body: water written into the diet as a food group (1.5 liters a day), two cups of milk or yogurt a day for protein, a daily vitamin D pill, and a ceiling on salt.
🌿 WHAT CHANGES AFTER 65 — AND WHAT THE PLATE DOES ABOUT IT
· Thirst fades — older bodies get drier and ask for less, and the old soup-and-beans table doubles as a drink
· Muscle needs more protein — at least 1 gram per kilogram a day for older people, and what 20 grams looks like on a Mediterranean table (Greek yogurt, a can of sardines, beans with cheese)
· The skin makes less vitamin D — less than half as much as a teenager's skin under the same sun, and why the scientists added a pill instead of trusting the plate
· Teeth and appetite change what gets eaten — and how Mediterranean kitchens solved chewing centuries ago with bean soups, bread soups and greens cooked soft
· The gut bacteria thin out — and the 2020 results linking the diet's bacteria to stronger grip, faster walking and lower inflammation

⚠️ THE HONEST PART
NU-AGE changed everything at once — food, counseling, water, the vitamin D pill — so it cannot tell us which edit did the work. The bone result came from a small group (24 people on the diet, 30 in the comparison). The gut paper shows bacteria and health moving together, not which one drives the other. A plate stacks the odds. It does not guarantee anything.
💬 How many glasses did you count today? And which of the five changes did you notice first in yourself?
