New in BMC Public Health: your bedtime may be set by what you do at breakfast, not at night.
Researchers tracked sunlight and sleep in 1,762 adults using the validated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Every extra 30 minutes of morning sun before 10 a.m. was associated with a sleep midpoint about 23 minutes earlier, plus better overall sleep quality. Midday light did almost nothing; morning was the lever. Early bright light advances your circadian clock, so melatonin rises on time that evening and you fall asleep earlier without forcing it.
The honest caveat: this is a cross-sectional study, not a randomized trial, so it shows association, not cause. Sun exposure was self-reported and the data come from one region in Brazil. Treat it as a strong signal that fits decades of circadian science, not a final verdict.
Today's drop: within an hour of waking, get outside for 10 to 15 minutes of natural light before 10 a.m. Cloudy still counts, and you do not need to stare at the sun.
Why a longevity doctor cares: circadian misalignment tracks with insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and inflammation, the same metabolic roots that drive aging. Fixing your light timing is one of the cheapest metabolic interventions there is.
