Does the ketogenic diet increase cancer risk? We break down the surprising new MIT study published in Nature (July 2026) showing a ketogenic diet accelerates intestinal tumors in mice, and explain the science of lipids, fatty acid oxidation, and why this rodent trial does NOT translate to human cancer risk.

In this video, we investigate a major new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published in the journal Nature, which reveals a shocking biological paradox: a ketogenic diet can accelerate tumor growth in the small intestine of genetically susceptible mice. For years, the low-carb, high-fat keto diet has been celebrated for its metabolic benefits and potential to starve tumors. However, researchers led by Dr. Ömer Yilmaz discovered that flooding intestinal cells with fats triggers a mitochondrial pathway called fatty acid oxidation (FAO). This upregulates the gatekeeper enzyme CPT1a and activates PPAR-delta, causing stem cells to hyper-proliferate and tipping cancer-prone cells over the edge.
But does this mean keto is dangerous for humans? We don’t think so. We break down the three crucial reasons why these preclinical mouse findings do not translate to healthy humans, including genetic models of susceptibility, why ketones are merely bystanders, and the profound evolutionary mismatch between seed-eating rodents and omnivorous humans..
