Winter is not a season for trial and error. Swap quick fixes for a calm plan that feeds your microbiome, protects your airways and respects your sleep (Wastyk H. et al., 2021; Koelman L. et al., 2021; Guarnieri G. et al., 2023; Eccles R., 2023).
Here is your simple, research-backed checklist:
Food first
Two servings of fermented foods plus two cups of fibre-rich plants each day on a Mediterranean-style base. Think yoghurt or kefir with kimchi, alongside legumes, wholegrains, brassicas and alliums. Expect higher microbial diversity and a quieter inflammatory tone (Wastyk H. et al., 2021; Koelman L. et al., 2021).
Vitamin C that actually helps
Regular or early 1,000 mg daily does not prevent every cold, but it reduces severity on average. At the first sign use 2,000 to 3,000 mg on day 1, then 1,000 mg twice daily for 3 to 5 days as tolerated. Gram-range dosing showed larger severity reductions in trials (Hemilä H. & Chalker E., 2023).
Nasal defence that works
At the first tickle use 3% hypertonic saline nasal irrigation plus a saline gargle two to three times per day for 3 to 5 days. Expect shorter illness, lower over-the-counter medicine use and fewer household infections (Ramalingam S. et al., 2019).
Air and sleep matter
Keep indoor relative humidity between 40 and 60 percent to support mucosal barriers and reduce irritants and aeroallergens, and protect 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep to stabilise immune–circadian crosstalk (Guarnieri G. et al., 2023; Eccles R., 2023).
Save this and share it with someone who always catches the first cold of the season. Try one tip today and track how you feel this week.
