About this video

Creator description · original textText language: English

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of global mortality, significantly impacting both lifespan and healthspan. A growing body of evidence, however, highlights the profound and often underestimated role of dietary patterns, particularly whole food, plant-based (WFPB) nutrition, in not only preventing and reversing CVD, but also in promoting overall longevity. This talk by Dr. GR Rajendiran, PSG Hospitals, Coimbatore, provides a comprehensive overview of landmark and cutting-edge research demonstrating the efficacy of WFPB diets in addressing the multifaceted etiology of CVD and its contribution to extending a healthy lifespan. Dr. Rajendiran begins by examining foundational epidemiological studies, including the Adventist Health Studies and analyses of populations consuming predominantly plant-based diets, which consistently demonstrate a significantly lower incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, stroke, and heart failure. The take then delves into the mechanistic pathways through which WFPB diets exert their cardioprotective and longevity-promoting effects. He analyzes the methodologies and outcomes of pivotal clinical trials, highlighting their clinical significance and their implications for extending healthspan. Dr. Rajendiran discusses the role of specific plant-based components, including nitrates (found in leafy greens) and polyphenols, in improving vascular health and potentially slowing cellular aging. He addresses practical considerations for implementing WFPB diets, including strategies for achieving nutritional adequacy, overcoming common barriers, and tailoring dietary recommendations to individual preferences and needs. 🔔 Subscribe and stay tuned!
