Since I launched the free Circadian Health Assessment, my inbox has been non-stop. People shocked by their results. Fascinating questions. Real cases that need explaining.
One person gave me consent to share his report anonymously — because what’s happening to him is happening to millions of people and most don’t know it.
His DLMO (Dim-Light Melatonin Onset) is at 00:53.
That means his brain doesn’t start producing enough melatonin until almost 1 AM. And here’s what most people don’t realise: after DLMO, it takes approximately 2 more hours for melatonin to rise to the concentration that opens your “sleep gate” (Shochat et al., 1997; Flynn-Evans et al., 2017).
His biological sleep gate? ~3 AM.
But he goes to bed at 11 PM. Every. Single. Night.
He lies there for 50 minutes trying to fall asleep. Wakes multiple times. Reports light, fragmented sleep. And in the morning — despite the light exposure — he doesn’t feel restored. Because his melatonin is still elevated. His brain is still in biological night.
Ritchie et al. (2017) confirmed that later chronotypes have significantly longer sleep inertia (~30+ minutes vs 10–20 min for early types) — because they’re being forced to wake during their melatonin window.
This is NOT insomnia. This is NOT poor sleep hygiene. This is circadian misalignment.
His CHI-Lite score: 84/100 — Severe.
Not because he’s doing something wrong. Because he’s living on someone else’s clock.
The fix? Know your timing. Build around YOUR biology.
