Every cell in your body runs on a clock and when that rhythm breaks, so does everything else.
As a Functional Registered Nutritionist and circadian biology researcher, I’ve spent years studying the connection between internal timing and health. But this new paper truly reframed how I think about ageing.
It confirmed what many of us in the field have suspected: from our liver to our lungs, each organ follows its own rhythm (Wang J. et al., 2025). And at the centre of it all sits the SCN, our brain’s master clock, synchronised to daylight and constantly sending timing signals across the body to the liver, kidneys, pancreas, even the prostate (Zhu W-Z. et al., 2023).
When this rhythm unravels, the effects are systemic. DNA repair slows. Inflammation rises. Cellular ageing accelerates (López-Otín C., Pietrocola F. et al., 2023). It’s not just about how much we sleep. It’s about when our body carries out vital tasks like immune regulation and hormone release (Wang J. et al., 2025).
The study also highlights the role of proteins like BMAL1 and CLOCK, which regulate gene activity in near 24-hour cycles, influencing everything from inflammation to immune strength (Wang J. et al., 2025). They even mapped out how core circadian genes and their SNPs interact with tumour pathways, a major leap forward in our understanding of circadian health and cancer (Wang J. et al., 2025).
Improving health isn’t just about what we do, it’s about when we do it (López-Otín C., Blasco M. et al., 2023).
