Melatonin may do more than help you sleep — here are the real melatonin benefits beyond your bedtime routine and what the science actually shows after 50.
Many of us think of melatonin only as a sleep hormone. It does help regulate your body's internal clock, but research also points to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and a possible role in protecting your mitochondria — those tiny structures inside your cells that produce energy.
That matters because oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction are all connected with aging.
Here's something else important: nighttime melatonin levels generally decline as we get older. That's normal — but it's also a reason to steward your sleep rhythms well.
Now, catch this. Don't run out and buy melatonin thinking you've found an anti-aging pill. We do not have strong evidence that taking melatonin supplements makes humans live longer or actually slows biological aging. The research on melatonin benefits is promising, but it is not proven.
The Bible says: "He giveth his beloved sleep." — Psalm 127:2, KJV. Sleep is one of the ways God designed the body to restore itself. When you cooperate with the design, the way God designed your body to function, you give your cells space to repair.
Your action step tonight: support your body's natural melatonin production. Dim the lights in the evening. Keep your bedroom dark. Avoid bright screens close to bedtime. And get natural daylight, especially earlier in the day. Before reaching for another supplement, first work with the way God designed your body to function.
Which of these will you try first tonight — dimming lights earlier or getting morning daylight? Let me know in the comments.
