The CALERIE trial — Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy — was the first multi-site randomized controlled trial to test sustained caloric restriction in healthy, non-obese adults in the United States. At two years, participants who reduced calories by approximately twelve percent showed measurable improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors, with no adverse effects on quality of life or bone health at the achieved restriction level. The vast majority of caloric restriction research in humans has been conducted in people who are overweight or obese. The interventions in those studies produce benefits, but it is difficult to know how much of the benefit comes from weight loss itself versus the caloric restriction. The CALERIE trial, which stands for Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy, addressed a different question: what happens when healthy, non-obese adults reduce their caloric intake by a sustained amount over two years? The phase two trial, published in the New England Journal of --- Paper cited: Caloric restriction with or without time-restricted eating in weight loss Authors: Ravussin E, Redman LM, Rochon J, Das SK, Fontana L, Kraus WE, Romashkan S, Williamson DA, Meydani SN, Villareal DT, Smith SR, Stein RI, Scott TM, Stewart TM, Saltzman E, Klein S, Bhapkar M, Martin CK, Gilhooly CH, Holloszy JO, Hadley EC, Roberts SB; CALERIE Study Group Journal: New England Journal of Medicine Year: 2015 DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa1414325 --- Subscribe for one peer-reviewed paper made practical, every Tuesday and Friday.
