"Just do your cardio and your heart will be fine." It's one of the most repeated pieces of health advice out there. But if you're only doing cardio, you may be leaving a huge amount of heart protection on the table. As a medical school professor who has worked at both UCLA and USC, here's the myth I want to bust: cardio is fantastic — but cardio ALONE is not the complete picture for protecting your heart and extending your life. Aerobic exercise clearly lowers cardiovascular risk. It improves blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and VO2 max — and VO2 max is one of the strongest predictors of how long you'll live. No argument there. But here's what the cardio-only crowd misses: strength training independently lowers your risk of dying. Large studies show that people who do resistance training — even without much cardio — have lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. And when you combine the two? The benefit is greater than either one alone. Muscle isn't just for looks. It's metabolically active tissue that soaks up blood sugar, improves insulin sensitivity, and protects you from frailty as you age. Losing muscle over the decades is one of the quietest drivers of decline — and cardio does very little to stop it. So the honest answer to "does cardio alone protect your heart?" is: it helps a lot, but it's not enough. The people who age the best aren't just runners or just lifters — they train both the engine and the chassis. The takeaway: keep your cardio, but add two to three days of strength training a week. Protect your heart, your muscle, and your metabolism at the same time. 👇 Free weekly metabolic breakdown — link in bio.
