New in the Journal of Sleep Research: men who extended sleep by 79 minutes a night dropped their blood pressure about 11 points — in six weeks.
It was a randomized controlled trial in 18 overweight men who habitually slept short. A six-week sleep-extension program added 79 minutes of measured sleep per night versus 6 in controls. Fasting insulin fell, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) improved, and blood pressure dropped roughly 11/12 mmHg, with smoother glucose swings on continuous monitors.
The caveat: a small, short trial — 18 men, six weeks, surrogate markers rather than heart attacks or strokes. It needs replication.
Today's drop: move your bedtime up by one hour tonight.
Why it matters: short sleep drives insulin resistance and sympathetic overdrive — two root causes of metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Extending sleep is a metabolic intervention, not just rest.
