What does Easter Island have to do with one of the most fascinating drugs in aging research?
Rapamycin was discovered from microorganisms in soil collected on Rapa Nui — Easter Island — and its story eventually led scientists to one of biology’s most important cellular pathways: mTOR.
Originally investigated for its antifungal properties, rapamycin went on to become an immunosuppressant and an important research tool. Then scientists discovered something even stranger: inhibiting mTOR could extend lifespan in several laboratory organisms, including mice.
But does that mean rapamycin is an anti-aging drug for humans?
Not quite.
In this episode of Brainstorm Bob, we explore the strange discovery of rapamycin, what mTOR actually does, why researchers became interested in it for longevity, and the enormous unanswered question between extending lifespan in laboratory animals and slowing human aging.
Sometimes one scoop of dirt can change biology.
