Epigenetics- The Reason Nutrition, Supplementation, & Peptide Therapy Matter: Online Continuing Education Course: A primary reason nutrition and supplementation can induce change is because of their downstream effects on the epigenome. The same reason eating processed foods destroys the epigenome. The study of epigenetics began in the late 1800’s and is linked with the study of evolution and development. Similar to what it is today, although the definition has evolved. The present definition of epigenetics reflects our understanding that although the DNA is essentially the same in all of an organism’s somatic cells, patterns of gene expression differ greatly among different cell types, and these patterns can be clonally inherited. The study of epigenetics has evolved from an odd curiosity to one of the most studied, cutting-edge scientific fields. The pioneers of epigenetic research were met with disbelief when they described phenomena that did not follow the normal Mendelian laws of inheritance, a so-called “law” created by another human, equally as fallible. Remember, most paradigm-shifting scientific discoveries are initially met with outrage and outright scorn, simply because they deviate from previously accepted norms, or “laws.” Today the concept that environmental influences, lifestyle changes, supplementation, nutrition, and treatments like dry needling and spinal manipulation can cause stable, heritable changes in gene expression, has been embraced. However, it is still not part of almost any mainstream form of medical treatment, and is still only briefly touched upon in medical schools!
