*What happens to work when our lives become longer, careers less linear, and five generations increasingly share the same workplace?*
The traditional architecture of working life was built around a relatively predictable sequence: education, employment, career progression, and retirement. Longer lives, demographic change, new technologies, evolving skills, and changing expectations are rapidly making that model obsolete.
In this panel from the *Milan Longevity Summit 2026*, *Valeria Bonilauri, Antonio Naddeo, Cetti Galante, and Massimiliano Branchi* join moderator *Annachiara Annino* to explore how the meaning and organisation of work must evolve for a society of longer lives.
The conversation brings together perspectives from *business, public administration, management, employment, skills, and workforce transformation* to ask a fundamental question: how should we value people across increasingly long and diverse working lives?
Longer careers will require more than simply extending the number of years people work. Skills will need to be renewed repeatedly. Career transitions may become normal rather than exceptional. Organisations will need to rethink how they attract, develop, and retain talent across generations. And individuals may move through multiple periods of work, learning, caregiving, reinvention, and contribution throughout their lives.
The panel explores what this means for employers, workers, and institutions.
How do we build workplaces where different generations can contribute and learn from one another? How should organisations value experience while continuously creating opportunities for younger talent? What role will lifelong learning play as careers extend? How can people navigate professional transitions without losing economic security or social value? And how do we redesign work around changing human needs rather than simply asking people to adapt to existing structures?
*Participants:*
• Valeria Bonilauri – Board Member, Consorzio ELIS
• Antonio Naddeo – President, ARAN
• Cetti Galante – Chief Executive Officer, INTOO
• Massimiliano Branchi – General Manager, Saipem
• Moderated by Annachiara Annino – Partner, Lattanzio KIBS
Ultimately, longer lives require us to rethink not only *how long we work*, but what work is for and how value is recognised throughout life.
*The future of work may be less about a single career and more about creating an architecture in which people can continue to learn, contribute, transition, and find purpose across a much longer human journey.*
The Milan Longevity Summit explores longevity beyond lifespan, examining how longer lives are reshaping *work, education, mental health, behaviour, communities, cities, relationships, and the way we experience society.*
