Ultra-processed food now makes up the majority of calories eaten in countries like the UK and the US, and it’s one of the biggest reasons rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease have exploded over the last few decades. These foods are engineered to be super easy to eat, cheap, long-lasting and difficult to STOP eating, but they also fundamentally change the way the body handles energy, hunger, blood sugar and inflammation. And the frightening thing is that a lot of people still think this conversation is just about calories or weight gain, when in reality it goes much deeper than that. In this video, I wanted to properly break down the science in a way that actually makes sense. We go through what ultra-processed food really is, how modified starches and refined carbohydrates affect blood glucose and insulin, what happens to the gut microbiome when fibre disappears from the diet, how chronic low-grade inflammation develops inside blood vessels, and why visceral fat is such an important link between modern diets and diseases like heart attacks, strokes and dementia. A lot of the damage builds silently for years before symptoms appear, which is exactly why this matters so much. We cover: -Why ultra-processed food is linked to heart disease -The hidden effects on inflammation and gut health -Modified starches, emulsifiers, nitrites and refined oils -Visceral fat, insulin resistance and blood sugar spikes -Why fibre and whole foods matter so much -The real reason Mediterranean diets work -What I’ve seen first-hand in emergency medicine TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Introduction 01:14 Why Food Is The Main Input 05:02 What Ultra-Processed Actually Means 07:22 What The Research Actually Shows 10:02 What This Looks Like At The Other End 11:45 Mechanism 1 — Why Ultra-Processed Food Makes You Overeat 14:14 Mechanism 2 — Gut Damage, Leaky Gut & Inflammation 17:18 Mechanism 3 — The Additives Problem 18:56 Mechanism 4 — Refined Oils, Sugar & Insulin Resistance 21:45 Mechanism 5 — The Nutrients Missing From Modern Food 24:06 Tell Me How I Can Help You REFERENCES Ultra-processed diets cause excess calorie intake and weight gain: an inpatient randomized controlled trial of ad libitum food intake https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31105044/ Ultra-processed foods and cardiovascular disease: analysis of three large US prospective cohorts and a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies (Nurses' Health Study, NHS II, and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39286398/ Ultra-processed food consumption and risk of cardiovascular events: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38389712/ Ultra-processed food exposure and adverse health outcomes: umbrella review of epidemiological meta-analyses https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38418082/ Ultra-processed foods: what they are and how to identify them (NOVA classification) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30744710/ Dietary emulsifiers impact the mouse gut microbiota promoting colitis and metabolic syndrome https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25731162/ Ultra-processed food intake and risk of cardiovascular disease: prospective cohort study (NutriNet-Santé) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31142457/ Ultra-processed foods and incident cardiovascular disease in the Framingham Offspring Study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33766258/ Associations of ultra-processed food consumption with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality: UK Biobank https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36006020/ Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes only and does not replace personalised medical advice from your doctor or healthcare professional. #ultraprocessedfood #heartdisease #nutrition #metabolichealth #visceralfat #dralex #doctoralex
