About this video

*Who should shape the future of biomedical innovation in Europe?* In this session from *Building Europe’s Biomedical Research Infrastructure* at the *Milan Longevity Summit 2026*, *Professor Massimo Florio* examines the economic and institutional case for strengthening Europe's public capacity in biomedical research and pharmaceutical innovation. Europe invests substantially in fundamental research, universities, healthcare systems, and scientific infrastructure. But how can that public investment translate more effectively into medicines and technologies that respond to society's health needs? Professor Florio explores the potential for new European models that connect publicly funded science with drug development, clinical research, and access to innovation. At the heart of the discussion is a broader question about the future of Europe's biomedical ecosystem: how can public institutions complement existing pharmaceutical models, retain more of the value generated by European research, and ensure that scientific innovation delivers long-term public benefit? Professor Massimo Florio is Professor of Public Economics at the *University of Milan*. His research focuses on public investment, infrastructure, innovation policy, and the economics of large-scale research organisations. He has been a leading voice in the debate around the creation of a *European public pharmaceutical research and development infrastructure*, exploring how public investment and new institutional models could strengthen Europe's capacity to address unmet health needs. The Milan Longevity Summit brings together global leaders across science, medicine, policy, business, technology and society to rethink the future of health through a *One Health* perspective—recognising that the wellbeing of people, planet and economies is deeply interconnected. *Learn more about the Milan Longevity Summit:* https://www.milanlongevitysummit.org/speakers26/massimo-florio #MilanLongevitySummit #OneHealth #MassimoFlorio #BiomedicalResearch #PublicPharma #EuropeanResearch #HealthInnovation #LifeSciences #PublicInvestment #FutureOfHealth
