About this video

Creator description · original textText language: American English

XPRIZE Healthspan just narrowed the field. 20 finalist teams remain in the $101M competition to prove that human aging can be reversed — and 10 of them have now been awarded $1M each to push toward clinical proof. Jamie Justice, who runs the competition, returns to the channel to talk about what the field looks like from the one vantage point nobody else has: watching hundreds of teams try the same thing at once, under a common measurement standard, with real money on the line. We get into which of the three proof domains — muscle, cognition, immune function — are moving fastest, and which are proving harder than expected. That question matters more than it sounds. A competition that measures all three equally will reveal where the science actually is, not where the enthusiasm is, and Jamie has a clearer view of that gap than almost anyone. We also talk about geography. The 2025 Innovation Landscape Report put team distribution at 55% North America, 13% Europe and 28% Asia with fully 25% (5 of the top 20) coming from Japan. We discuss how Japan, which is experiencing the joys an consequences of a rapidly aging population, has placed longevity as a national priority. And we spend time on the measurement problem underneath all of it. Jamie co-authored a Nature Medicine paper this summer with Andrea Cipriano and Chiara Herzog laying out a framework for evaluating immune aging biomarkers — because you cannot award a prize for improving something the field can't agree how to measure. That paper is the measurement backbone for a third of the largest prize XPRIZE has run. We also discuss how the XPRIZE has fostered a surprising amount of collaboration and team work across the teams competing for the award.
