About this video

*Are ageing populations really the problem — or do we need a different way of thinking about demographic change?* In this presentation from *Policies for Sustainable and Inclusive Societies* at the *Milan Longevity Summit 2026*, *Professor Arnstein Aassve* explores the demographic transformations reshaping societies and the assumptions we make about their consequences. Longer lives are unfolding alongside declining fertility, changing family structures, migration, and new patterns of work and care. Together, these shifts are changing the balance between generations and challenging policies and institutions designed for a very different demographic reality. Rather than looking at ageing or fertility as isolated trends, demographic research allows us to understand how population dynamics interact with economic conditions, family decisions, social policy, and individual wellbeing. *Arnstein Aassve* is Professor of Demography and Director of *FutuRes at Bocconi University*, where his research focuses on population dynamics, fertility, family change, wellbeing, and the relationship between demographic behaviour and society. His contribution invites us to look beyond the headline numbers and ask a more useful question: *how can understanding demographic change help us design better societies for the generations already living through it?* The Milan Longevity Summit brings together global leaders across science, policy, business, technology and society to explore longevity through a *One Health* perspective — connecting the health of people with the health of our societies, economies, and planet. *Learn more about the Milan Longevity Summit:* https://www.milanlongevitysummit.org/it/speakers26/arnstein-aassve #MilanLongevitySummit #ArnsteinAassve #Demographics #Population #Longevity #OneHealth #SocialPolicy #HealthyAgeing #FutureOfSociety #IntergenerationalEquity
